Depression is more than feeling sad or going through a difficult patch. It can make even the simplest tasks feel impossible, strip away enjoyment from things you used to love, and leave you feeling cut off from the people around you. If you are living with depression, reaching out for support is one of the most important steps you can take.
Depression affects people in different ways. Some experience persistent low mood, fatigue, and a loss of motivation that makes getting through the day feel like a struggle. Others feel numb rather than sad, as though they are watching their own life from a distance. Many people also feel ashamed of how they are feeling, particularly when they cannot point to an obvious reason for it. This shame can make it harder to ask for help.
Persistent low or flat mood
Fatigue and low energy

Loss of interest or pleasure
Feelings of worthlessness or shame

Feeling numb or disconnected
I provide a warm, non-judgemental space where you can talk about your experience of depression honestly and without pressure. My integrative approach draws on humanistic and psychodynamic counselling alongside CBT techniques. We work at your pace, exploring what has contributed to how you are feeling and what might help you begin to move forward.

I have also received training in psychiatry and psychopathology, which means I understand the clinical picture around depression and can work alongside any support you may be receiving from your GP or a psychiatrist. If you are having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please know that you can speak to me about this. I am a fully trained Samaritan and have extensive experience supporting people in distress. I take these conversations seriously and will always respond with care.
If you are in crisis right now, please call the Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7), contact your GP, or go to your nearest A&E. These services are there for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is counselling effective for depression?
Counselling is one of the most widely recommended treatments for depression, and research shows that talking therapies can make a significant difference, particularly for mild to moderate depression. It works well alongside other support where needed, such as medication prescribed by a GP.
How do I know if what I am experiencing is depression?
Common signs of depression include persistent low mood, loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of hopelessness. If you recognise these in yourself, it is worth speaking to both your GP and a counsellor.
I am worried about burdening someone with how I feel. Can I still come for counselling?
Yes, absolutely. Many people who come to me feel exactly this way. Counselling is a space specifically for you, and you will not be a burden. Talking about what you are experiencing is an important part of beginning to feel better.
