Low self-esteem is not just feeling a bit insecure from time to time. For many people, it is a persistent sense of not being good enough, not deserving good things, or not being worthy of care or success. These feelings can affect every area of your life, from your relationships and your work to how you treat yourself day to day. Counselling can help you understand where these beliefs have come from and begin to change them.
Low self-esteem often has its roots in early experiences: how we were spoken to as children, whether we felt loved and valued, experiences of bullying, failure, or loss. Over time, these experiences can become part of the story we tell ourselves about who we are. That story can feel very hard to question, even when it is not true.
Persistent self-criticism
Feeling not “good enough”
Difficulty accepting compliments
Uncertainty about who you are
People-pleasing or difficulty saying no
Imposter syndrome
Fear of failure or rejection
Feeling lost or directionless
In our sessions, I take time to understand your experience and what has shaped how you see yourself. My integrative approach draws on humanistic counselling, which places great emphasis on your inherent worth as a person, alongside psychodynamic work, which helps us understand the deeper roots of self-critical patterns. Where helpful, I also draw on CBT techniques to gently challenge unhelpful ways of thinking.
“Many of my clients are surprised to discover how much of their low self-esteem is connected to experiences from long ago. Recognising this doesn’t make those experiences go away, but it can change the way you relate to the inner critic that has been shaping your self-view.”

Frequently asked questions
Is low self-esteem the same as depression?
They often overlap, but they are not the same thing. Low self-esteem is a persistent negative view of your own worth, while depression involves a broader range of symptoms including low mood, loss of energy, and loss of interest in daily life. It is possible to have low self-esteem without depression, though the two frequently occur together.
Can counselling genuinely improve how I feel about myself?
Yes. Many of my clients find that counselling brings about a meaningful shift in how they see themselves. This is not about becoming unrealistically positive; it is about developing a more balanced, compassionate view of who you are. This takes time, but the change is real.
How long does it take to work on low self-esteem in counselling?
Low self-esteem often has deep roots, so this tends to be an area where longer-term work brings the most benefit. That said, many clients notice early shifts within the first few sessions. We will discuss what pace and duration feels right for you.
