Counselling for trauma and difficult experiences

About Donna
BACP-registered, Samaritan-trained. Trauma-informed integrative counsellor.
What we mean by trauma
Trauma isn’t defined by the event — it’s defined by its impact. Something that feels manageable to one person can be deeply wounding to another, and that’s not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of how that experience intersected with your history, your nervous system, and your sense of safety in the world.
Trauma can be a single overwhelming event, or it can be the accumulated weight of many smaller experiences — growing up in an unpredictable environment, chronic stress, emotional neglect, or repeated experiences of not being safe. Both are real. Both deserve care.
Emotional numbness
Shame or self-blame
Reactions that feel “out of proportion”
Hypervigilance or being “on guard”
Difficulty trusting others
Difficulty feeling safe
Childhood experiences still affecting you today
“Healing from trauma is not about forgetting what happened. It’s about no longer being held hostage by it.”
How counselling can help
Working with trauma in counselling requires great care. I will never push you to talk about anything before you’re ready, and I will always follow your lead on pace and depth. Safety comes first — always.
We’ll work to build a sense of stability and trust in our relationship before exploring the more difficult material. Over time, we can begin to make sense of your experiences, understand how they’ve shaped you, and gradually reduce the hold they have on your present.
This is slow, careful, relational work — and it does make a difference.
A note on safety
If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, please call the Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7), contact your GP, or go to your nearest A&E. I am not an emergency service, but safety is always part of our conversation.
